Steam cleaning of air conditioners
In 2012, Steam cleaning tests were ran out in air conditioners within one of our customers: Soccram Ile de France (Cofely – GDF Suez).
During these tests, we evaluated the efficiency of steam cleaning of an air handling unit (AHU). Two tests were performed :
- On clogged filters : we removed these filters and a single pass of dry steam was performed
- On the air handling unit (AHU)

Visually, we found a very good dust removal of dirty filters :
Furthermore, velocity measurements were performed after steam cleaning :
- Before steam cleaning : 19700 m3/h
- After steam cleaning : 40700 m3/h
Cleaning a air handling unit with steam is very effective, since it helps to unclog filters and cleans with meticulous care the fins without bending or damaging them.

Dry steam at a high temperature (> 160°C) has a powerful cleaning action in dissolving dirt and grease. Associated with a 8-bar pressure, dry steam unclogs filters and dislodges dirt in inaccessible areas (particularly between the fins). Dry steam enables a mechanical action, since dirt is stirred and loosened but the fragile fins are not damaged.
In addition, dry steam has a lethal effect on microorganisms and decontaminates condensers, coolers, fins...
